2 CONC . D. Atherton, who,was well known in musical circles in Chester and late organist of St Mary'
2 CONC s Church-within-the-walls.  Mrs Atherton, who was daughter of the late Mr John Swindley, meta
2 CONC l worker, of Chester, was for some time a resident of Mold.  She leaves one daughter.

2 CONT We regret to announce the death, which occured on Friday, at the age of 48 of Mr Wilfred Down
2 CONC ing Atherton, of 5 Overleigh Terrace, Chester.  Mr Atherton was the only son of the late Rueb
2 CONC en Atherton, for many years the Headmaster of St Mary's School, Handbridge.  After being educ
2 CONC ated in the Kings School Chester, he entered service of the Westminster Bank in Liverpool, wh
2 CONC ere he remained until ten years ago, ill health compelling him to retire. He was a staunch su
2 CONC pporter of St Mary's-on-the-hill, where for some years, he acted as organist.  A Year or tw
2 CONC o ago he went on a tour of Canada with a Welsh Concert Party. He Married first Miss Jessie Sw
2 CONC indley of Chester, who died about four years ago, and he re-married a year ago. He is survive
2 CONC d  by his wife and a daughter, Mrs N Swindley. The funeral took place onTuesday at Prestatyn
2 CONC .  The chief Mourners were: Mrs W D Atherton (widow), Mr & Mrs N Swindley, (son-in-law and da

2 CONC tion who evidenced their appriciation of her worth by attending her funeral.  It was a touchi
2 CONC ng sight, those many children assembled in God's House to shew their love and respect to he
2 CONC r who had trained their young minds to live noble lives, and by example helped them upwards a
2 CONC nd onwards. Mrs Atherton assisted willingly in every movement for the good of the parish gene
2 CONC rally, and of the children in particular, who will undoubtly rise up and call her blessed
2 CONC !   Much sympathy is shown to Mr Atherton and his son in their great loss."

2 CONT There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place on Saturday, of Mr Rueben Ather
2 CONC ton, the vetern schoolmaster and town councillor of Chester. The Rev A W Sarson conducted th
2 CONC e service in St Mary's-on-the-hill Church, and the choir was present, including a number of f
2 CONC ormer pupils of Mr Atherton. Mr A C Kendrick, the organist (who succeeded Mr Atherton as Head
2 CONC master of St Mary's Boys School), played Schuberts "Litnay", Elergy" (Hollins) and "O rest i
2 CONC n the Lord" before the service. The Hymns were "Fight the Good Fight", " As with gladness Me
2 CONC n of Old" and the "Nune Dimittis" was sung.
