Robert married Lydia Mellor on 21 Feb 1864 in St Nicholas Church Liverpool.
They had the following children:
3 F i Selina Alexander Atherton was born 1846. She died 23 Dec 1929 in Chester and was buried 28 Dec 1929 in Chester Overleigh Road Cemetary.[Notes] + 4 M ii Reuben Atherton was born 30 Sep 1864 and died 27 Jun 1933.
